We are excited to share an important update: Educating for Equality Ltd is now Educating for Equity CIC.
This change is more than cosmetic — it’s about clarity, accountability, and our commitment to a more just future. Our new name and structure more accurately reflect both our ethos and the direction of our work.
Why Equity, Not Equality?
The distinction between equality and equity is vital. Equality is about giving everyone the same resources or opportunities, but it assumes we all begin from the same starting point. In reality, that simply isn’t true. Equity recognises that people begin from very different places and therefore need different levels and kinds of support to achieve fair outcomes.
Our work has always been about more than “level playing fields.” We aim to remove barriers, challenge systemic injustices, and create conditions in which every learner and community can truly thrive. That is the heart of equity.
A Sharpened Focus on Anti-Racism
Alongside this shift in name, we are deepening our focus on anti-racist praxis. In the UK, systemic racism continues to shape educational opportunities and outcomes. Its impact intersects with class, gender, disability, and other forms of inequality, compounding disadvantage for many learners.
By explicitly foregrounding anti-racism, we are naming and tackling one of the deepest structural injustices in education. This does not mean ignoring other dimensions of inequality. Rather, it means embedding them within a broader, intersectional approach that recognises how different forms of oppression connect and reinforce one another.
This is why we are not naming gender equality in isolation. Instead, we are positioning anti-racism as a lens through which all inequalities are understood and addressed — a praxis that insists on structural change rather than surface-level inclusion.
Updating Our Awards Criteria
Our awards criteria will evolve to reflect this renewed focus. We will continue to recognise and celebrate schools and organisations that demonstrate genuine commitment to inclusion, but the bar will be set higher. We will highlight not only policies and intentions, but also meaningful actions that dismantle racism, challenge inequity, and build educational systems where all learners can flourish.
Why a CIC?
Changing from a Limited Company (Ltd) to a Community Interest Company (CIC) is another deliberate step. A CIC structure ensures that our mission remains at the core of everything we do. It legally binds us to reinvest surpluses back into the communities we serve, rather than prioritising profit. This model aligns with our values of sustainability, accountability, and social justice.
Looking Ahead
This change is more than a new name. It is a stronger declaration of who we are and what we stand for: equity, anti-racism, and transformative justice in education.
We invite our community of educators, partners, and learners to join us in this next chapter — one where we continue working together to dismantle barriers and create education systems rooted in fairness, dignity, and hope.
